Fievel was on his way to a high-kill shelter in rural Texas, when a kind but very young woman offered to take him. Her parents weren’t on board, however, and she needed to find him a placement as soon as possible.
Fievel is 13 but has many problems. He is deaf, almost totally blind, and was covered in scabs. A short-haired black cat, he would not have turned many heads in a municipal shelter even if he was in the best of health.
The young woman sent a plea to Austin Pets Alive’s program, Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.). Karen, a lady who lives about 40 miles away and monitors the P.A.S.S. website, offered to take him temporarily, thereby buying him a little more time.
P.A.S.S. contacted Thundering Paws. When the shelters closed in the spring, we took in so many cats and kittens that we’ve stopped intake except in extreme circumstances. Fievel’s circumstances fits this bill!
Karen’s daughter works for a low-cost spay/neuter clinic and the vet there looked at Fievel. She determined that his skin condition is completely due to a flea allergy. Since Karen had already bought and applied Revolution for Fievel, there were no more living fleas. One problem solved.
The vet confirmed his deafness and blindness. However, he is a very sweet kitty, who only wants to be loved.
He will go to Karen’s vet in Killeen on 12/23, then transfer to his Thundering Paws foster. He will no doubt need more vet care and that is where you can help.
